Unsuitable students should be kept away

16-01-2012 @ 12:50:42 by Sensor

It would be easier for universities to keep the door closed for students who are unsuitable to study. This is the opinion of rector Gerard Mols of the University of Maastricht. The high percentage of stu-dents dropping out in the first year of their study should be decreased.

Drop-out percentage

Higher education is accessible for everybody in the Netherlands, when they have a Higher Secondary Education diploma. But within universities, students the percentage of drop-outs is high. Especially the studies of Economics and Law have high percentages: between 25 and 40 per cent of the students drops out during the first year.

Motivated students only

Mols wants a new measure to make it easier for universities to refuse students. He thinks that the drop out percentage will decrease when only motivated students can enroll.
