Tips to avoid becoming a Freshman Fatty

01-12-2011 @ 13:30:35 by Sensor

The new first-year students gain kilos and more kilos weight in the first months of the new school year. Also in the Netherlands this problem occurs, and the ‘Freshman Fifteen’s’ are to be found here. Do you want to know how to avoid becoming a Freshman Fatty? Read the tips below!

Dutch fatties

Professor Anton Scheurink from the University in Groningen researched the ‘Freshman Fifteen’ phe-nomenon amongst Dutch students. It seems to be very hard for students to live a healthy live once they left their parents’ home and live their own lives in a students’ residence. The irregular lives stu-dents live in combination with unhealthy food and not sporting have serious results.

  • Avoid fluid calories
There is nothing causing more increasing of weight than alcohol, sweet coffees and soft drinks. It is better to skip the mix drinks, wine and beer because these contain lots and lots of calories. Go for water and light drinks.

  • Plan your meals
Canteens can be a nightmare to students. Because after of before a tough class, it is nice to have a snack. No! Choose to eat an apple and avoid snacks. Plan your meals during the day, so that you know what you want to eat when. This is healthier and cheaper.

  • Work-out near where you study
Try to do sports in the neighborhood of your school or university. This way, it is easier to work-out right after your lesson have finished.

  • Be a clever sport
Don’t you like working-out in the gym or attending the weekly fitness club? Think of a way to get your body working-out. Walk to school, to the supermarket and avoid the elevator when there are stairs. Hold your bag in your arms instead of on your back.

  • Hide temptations
If you live alone you decide what is in your room to eat. But if you have crisps, sweets, cookies and other snacks available, you are more tempted to eat them all. So just don’t buy them! Make sure you have apples and other fruits you can eat.

  • Reduce stress
Students with less stress seem to gain less pounds compared to students who suffer from stress. Stress can be reduced by working-out, have a clear structure of the day or week and using your time well. Try to procrastinate as less as possible, as it increases stress.

  • Follow the two-third rule
Fill two-third of your plate with grain, fruit and vegetables when you are going to eat. This way, there is less space for fat food. Avoid fibers because they make you fat. Another trick is to grab a smaller plate.

  • Wait…
Wait at least half an hour before you take another serving of your meal. Your brains need at least twenty minutes to tell you that your stomach is full. You often eat too much, while this is unnecessary!

  • Change your room!
Don’t you like working-out? Buy a fitness DVD and do the work-out at home! Even the smal-lest room can be turned in a semi gym. All you need is a DVD player, a bottle of water and a towel. Plan three digital fitness sessions of one hour a week. Easy as that!
