Yesterday, Communication and Multimedia design students presented their final product, which they worked on during the minor ‘GAME’. The result: Epic Priest, a role-playing game which was designed in eight weeks.
Popular activity
There were many students interested in the minor GAME. This isn’t strange, while gaming is a popular activity amongst youngsters and students. So if you get the chance to experience the making of a videogame, you go for it. During the minor, a lot of students dropped out because of the high level.
Hard work
One of the students who followed this minor is Florian Fürstein. He is an Austrian exchange student from the Fachhochschule Vorarlberg, partner school of the HAN, and has been living in the Nether-lands for half a year now. His purpose is to learn everything about computer games. ‘I can cope with the level’, Florian says, ‘although you have to work very hard!’ The Austrian student was responsible for the animations in the game, the map and the balance between the teams. ‘And if you play this game, you can see a train moving in the background. I made that one,’ he laughs.
Michael Jackson's Neverland
The first part of the semester is all about theory but the second part is the coolest, because the stu-dents are allowed to design and create their own game. Florian made a game together with 15 other students, while they started with 30. They designed the game Epic Priest, a role-playing game which takes place in Neverland, the entertainment park of Michael Jackson. Six characters, three good guys and three bad guys, are competing against each other. They all have different strengths.
Enthusiasm
During the presentation of the game, the enthusiasm of the designers and students who followed the minor stands out. ‘You cannot compare this game to a commercial, popular cone, but if you take the time and man-power we had into account, the result is very well,’ one of the students says during the presentation.
Back to Austria
Florian will go home at the end of this week, with a good feeling. ‘I had great fun and it was a nice experience to be the only foreigner taking part in a project like this. I am proud with the final product’.
