Find yourself a room!

09-06-2011 @ 10:39:51 by Marijn Hondorp

In Sensor #18, the main subject is finding a room when you’re studying. What are the main rules? What do you have to do, and what must you absolutely (without any exceptions) NOT do?

Do's and Don'ts!

With these tips, you will definitely survive the night when your potential future-roommates are checking you out… while you are suffering and hoping for the best, to get chosen by them and have your own room (and with a little bit of luck, nice housemates too)!!

Don’t...

  • expect an answer back immediately, when you contact via e-mail. A renter gets hundreds of reac-tions to his/her advertisement in no time. So wait, patiently…
  • arrive to early! You might seem desperate. But don’t arrive too late either, because that might seem uninterested
  • take your parents with you when you go to watch the room! Don’t take anybody with you at all!
  • say things you don’t mean! Don’t talk the way the roommates want you to talk, just be honest!
  • ask: ‘what is the chance that I am getting this room?’ because it sounds insecure.
  • Be sure you will pull the attention towards you, but don’t overdo it by performing a one (wo)man show!
  • forget to ask questions about practical things, such as the washing-machine, internet connec-tion etc.
  • take any rejection personally! The people of the house can only choose one roommate!

Do...

  • talk about what you are really interested in. Specifically, not generally! Talk about the bands you like, film titles, favourite hotspots etc.
  • appear fresh and good-tempered! Nobody likes a sweaty and bad-tempered person!
  • be honest with the roommates! If you don’t like the room or the house, just say so! Finish the con-versation neatly, and disappear!

Keep these rules in mind, and you will do fine!!! Good luck!

Where to start?

These sites will help you start finding a room! Unfortunately they are in Dutch, but that's just a detail...

www.kamernet.nl The most popular site for students who are looking for a room, or want to let their room

www.opmijnkamer.nl Another popular room-rent site

www.kamers.startpagina.nl This sites has many links to a lot of subjects to do with renting and letting a room!
