Find yourself a new housemate!

10-06-2011 @ 10:49:30 by Marijn Hondorp

In Sensor #18, the main subject is finding a room when you’re studying. What are the main rules? What do you have to do, and what must you absolutely (without any exceptions) NOT do? But, in addition to that, there are some rules and tricks for students who want to find a new housemate as well! Enjoy en learn!

Do's and Don'ts!

You are looking for a nice housemate! These are tips and tricks for you, to have a good procedure to finally find your beloved new roommate!

Do...

  • give shy people a chance to talk about themselves, ask questions to motivate them!
  • try to make the advertisement (for the internet or newspaper) as short as possible. Describe the room, the house and the location. Describe the kind of person you are looking for (pet animals al-lowed? Smoking allowed? Working or studying?)
  • talk to your housemates about what you want and what you find important. This avoids confusion and fights…

Don’t...

  • invite more than 10 people to your house. If you want to invite more than 10 people, divide them in two groups, and have one group during one evening, and the other group the next evening.
  • forget to lead your potential housemates around the house! They need to see what's there and what's not!
  • Lie about the price of the room! Don't make it seem cheaper or more expensive than it is, potential housemates might drop it when they find out.

Where to start?

On the following websites you can make your own account (sometimes for free) and put as many advertisments on the internet as you want! But mind that many students try to find a room, and that you might receive 100000000 responses...!!

www.kamernet.nl A Dutch site, but the most popular one when it comes to advertising

www.opmijnkamer.nl

www.kamers.startpagina.nl This site provides many links to other sites which all have to do with renting and letting rooms
