Studying is too hard for mothers

07-06-2011 @ 13:50:54 by Marijn Hondorp

There has never been a policy for the 9000 studying single-mothers in this country, and still there is none. Educational organizations are not prepared for those mums, with their non-flexible time schedules. Moreover, the children’s daycare and financial support aren’t sufficient for the mothers.

'We want mothers to get employed'

This was concluded by the Foundation Support Studying Mothers, which is going to debate with the government soon. ‘This all happens while we all want mothers to get employed. But this group is not mentioned anymore in a single emancipation-notion. They are not paid attention to. Even though the European Parliament has promised to make a combination of studying and children possible’, director of the foundation Annemiek de Jong says.

Annoying mums

According to Annemiek de Jong, mothers are still seen as exceptional and annoying. ‘People say: “You should not have had children while you were studying”, but life doesn’t work that way. Sometimes it doesn’t work out the way you’ve planned. Besides, the government wants women to get children earlier.’
