No more 5.5 at Radboud University

16-05-2011 @ 14:50:16 by Marijn Hondorp

The old good times when you passed your test with a 5.5 as your grade are over. Nowadays, students fail with a 5.0 and pass with a 6.0. The 5.5 is expelled. This was a decision of the Board of Governors.

Clear to everyone?

With this decision, the Board of Governors wants to create more clarity about the standard, in order to get rid of the question: is a 5.5 a pass or a fail? Besides, grades are now expressed in whole and half numbers. Students’ council member Dirk Cornelissen regrets this decision. ‘Exact grades are better, because they give a clearer view of the result’.

No more re-sitting for a good grade

The board advises the faculties not to let students re-sit their test for a better grade when they already passed it. ‘That is regrettable as well’, Cornelissen reacts. ‘I know students who want to get a better grade to graduate with distinction. These new measures obstruct the interests of the students.’ When students fail, they get another chance to pass and the last received grade will count.
