Increase in binge-drinking youth

08-06-2011 @ 15:59:55 by Marijn Hondorp

More and more youngsters finish up in hospitals with alcoholic poisoning. Last year, 648 young alco-hol addicts visited the pediatrician (doctor for children). That was an increase of 37 per cent compared to 2009, when 500 breezer-drinkers passed by.

Unconscious in hospitals

On average, the youngster have an age of 15 and are in a coma for three hours, according to the Telegraaf newspaper. Some youngsters were unconscious for two days. Even young children drink a beer (or ten) too much. 27 children aged 13 had to be taken to the hospital really quickly, to be on a drip.

'Alarming results'

These numbers are mentioned in the report ‘Alcohol poisoning amongst youngsters in Holland’, which was recently revealed. Pediatrician Nico van der Ley finds the results alarming. ‘In 2007, the number of coma-drinkers was 300. These days, the number has multiplied. Moreover, the number is underestimated, because in the youngsters who are treated by a doctor or have been treated in hos-pital are not included’.
