Three students from the Univeristy of Gent (Belgium) have developed a clone of Twitter: ‘Yelper’. Yelper has 141 available symbols, whereas Twitter only has 140.
Tweet and Yelp
To avoid complications, the students chose for a different programming language. Another difference is that ‘Yelper’ is only used for educational purposes. And the name Yelp? It refers to the English verb ‘to yelp’, which is the sound of a fox.
No competition with Twitter
The students Computer and Information Science announced not wanting to compete with Twitter. ‘With this project we want to show others how to create their own social network, and offer them a project in which as many different technologies as possible get a chance,’ the students told metrotime.be.
