Research students living away from home

09-05-2011 @ 16:00:56 by Marijn Hondorp

Almost 70 per cent of all Dutch students live in a students’ house (64.5 per cent to be exact). This was a result of a research held among 1051 students. Another stated fact is that the students living away from home, share facilities inside the house with two to four housemates.

A few facts

  • 6 per cent of the students living away from home has more than 12 housemates
  • 60 per cent of the students has dinner together with housemates every week
  • 6 per cent of those students has dinner together every day
  • almost 50 per cent of the students living away from home share a common room

Factors for choice

The size and price of a room, is an important thing for students. 50 per cent of the students say the price is the decisive factor for their choice. The size is important to 17.5 per cent. The distance be-tween the room and the city centre is most important to 12 per cent.

Home-townsickness

One third of the students lives at home, with their parents. A reason for this is that living at home is cheaper. Besides, 11 per cent doesn’t want to live alone or doesn’t want to leave their home-town because of work or friends.

The research was held amongst students from HBO (Higher vocational education, 58%), MBO (inter-mediate vocational education 39%) and WO (higher education 3%)
