Say bye to the scarecrow

15-03-2011 @ 13:51:00 by Marijn Hondorp

The traditional scarecrow, or bird scarer, can go! A group of Car Engineering students has developed a better method during the to scare geese and birds, to avoid them destroying meadows and fields, during their minor Autotronica.

Tyker Technology

‘The assignment was given to us by Tyker Technology’, says Lex van Rijswijk, ‘because the current methods to scare birds away don’t work well enough. The birds and geese know that a scarecrow doesn’t move, so they are not scared to come close. That is why Tyker Technology came up with a new method, which was explored and carried out by us’.

GPS

A new soft- and hardware was developed to be put on a trolley, which drives across the fields. The machine knows whether it is on the right trail, by the help of GSP equipment, to avoid damaging the fruits and vegetables on the field. ‘Attached to the trolley is a rope, which covers the whole field. When geese or birds come close, the rope moves and the trolley will ride. The birds will be too scared to land on the field.’

Good results

The group of students presented their work in January to Tyker Technology, and all they got were positive responses. The initiator was very happy with the result. We are contented as well, and we think it was a nice and educative project’.
