Afghan students union in Nijmegen

Nijmegen has been having a new students Union since 23 February. At that very day, the establishment ceremony of the new students union took place in the auditory of UMC St. Radboud. The new union is called ‘Mayhan students’. Mayhan means fatherland.

According to chairman Fahrang Dehzad, fourth-year student medical science and one of the eight founders, a new Afghan students union is of main interest. ‘There are a lot of Afghan students at schools and universities in the Netherlands. They are often holding back in their students’ lives. They follow their classes and sit their exams, but besides that they don’t do anything. Mayhan students wants to gather these students together, by organizing sportive and relaxing activities. By creating a social network.’
Turnout at the ceremony
According to the chairman, the list of people interested counts 70 names. The turnout at the ceremony was also beyond the expected. Several speakers talked during the ceremony, amongst who rector magnificus Bas Kortman of the Radboud University and municipal counselor of Nijmegen Henk Beerten.
