Job to shop

Almost half of the students has a job, in order to be able to do ‘fun things’. But these jobs seem to be reducing the study results. This was shown by the results of a research amongst thousand students.
Different reasons for jobs
One third of the students has a job to gain work experience. They hope to get a higher position in the labour market. Twenty percent of the students needs a job to pay the study fees. The majority (47 percent) has a job to be able to do extra things. ‘I like shopping’, Teacher Training College student Maaike explains. ‘If I have received my salary, I go shopping. I don’t do it to gain working experience, because I work at the bread-section in the supermarket.’ Her parents pay her school fees and books, and she still lives home with them. ‘So it is not necessary for me to have a job, but I want to be able to go out for dinner or do other things. Otherwise all I can do is sitting at home’.
