The slum landlord of the year

01-12-2010 @ 11:19:29 by Marijn Hondorp

Do you pay too much for your room? Is your house keeper too pushy? Is your room the size of a cupboard? Is your room a sloppy cage? Is the situation in your house unsafe or even dangerous? The national students’ union LSVb have been trying, in cooperation with ROOD (the youth organization of the Social Party) to do something about these crimes for years, via the election of the most slum landlord of the year.

The last drop

In most university cities there is still need for more rooms for students. Landlords benefit from this by increasing the prices, and ask too much rent for a small room. Students are afraid to say something about it because they don’t want to end up homeless. Student Michelle Foolen, leads the action in Nijmegen. Michelle: ‘We started very impressive. In front of the Refter at the University campus, students could experience how it feels to be a landlord, by literally ‘milk’ the last drop of hot chocolate out of a house (see picture).

Nominate your landlord

During earlier editions of the election, the students union got many complaints about high rents, intimidation, bad services and ambiguous rent applications. Students can subscribe their landlords for the election on the website www.huisjesmelkervanhetjaar.nl
