Anxiety about cut back educational costs

29-11-2010 @ 10:41:31 by Marijn Hondorp

Last week, more than a hundred students together with dozens of other student- and employment organizations offered a petition to State Secretary Halbe Zijlstra (education). They are highly concerned about the cut back of educational costs.

Study fees increase

The petition was signed with 102,800 signatures, and is the result of the ‘Minimal nominal’ action against the government to cut back costs on study grants and increase the study fees in higher education and universities.

Expensive measures

The government has more plans to interfere in higher education: students who reach a study delay of more than one year, have to pay three thousand Euros extra, and also give back their student travel cards. Besides, the concerning college or university must pay a fine of three thousand Euros per student. The government wants to introduce these new measures from study year 2011-2012 on.

Ridiculous

HAN-student Sanne (22) finds the government’s plans ridiculous. ‘Just wait for a while, and you will see that only the rich students can afford to study, just like in former times. If I didn’t get a study grant, I wouldn’t even start a study. I am having a hard time getting by now already!’
