Students HAN participate in Amsterdam-Dakar Challenge

Amsterdam – Dakar. It is not a race, but a challenge. Or even better: a Trash-trip. The participating cars are not allowed to cost more than five hundred Euros. And it’s not about who’s crossing the finish line as first, but the fact that you cross it. Participants get a month to reach the finish in Dakar. It is very clear that it will be everything but easy.
The extremer, the better
A trip of 7000 kilometers, from North-Holland to West-Africa, with of course all natural and bureaucrat-ic obstacles. Still, it is exactly what students Boudewijn de Mooij and Frenk Vollebregt (Electro tech-nology and Small Business) are up to. They voluntarily choose the extreme route. ‘And if we reach Dakar, we hand the car back to the organization. The organization sells cars at the spot, via an auction in a huge stadium,’ Boudewijn says.
Charity Nice To Be Nice
With the proceeds the students support a charity, chosen by themselves: Nice To Be Nice, a founda-tion who is dedicated to better education in Africa. ‘We pay our costs, so the proceeds are totally for Nice To Be Nice’. The men have an own team-website: ‘We are with ten men, and five cars’, Boudewijn laughs. The other eight are family members and friends. The participants have bought three cars so far: two Nissan Patrol and a Land Rover. They are in search for two more fourwheeldrivers for a nice price and a good cause.
If you want to get rid of your 4x4, or for more information you can check www.teamvollebolle.nl . The start of the Challenge is on 12 February 2011. It could be an interesting competition…
