Roomrent does not have to be expensive

15-09-2010 @ 13:10:20 by Marijn Hondorp

Are you paying too much rent for your room? In Nijmegen, you don’t have to do so anymore, because the rent-teams have come into existence ! The last six months, 186 renters went to the rent-teams. For most of them it was a successful experience.

Rent-teams

The rent-teams are an initiative of the Student Union AKKU in Nijmegen. Since 2009 the rent-teams visit houses to determine whether the rent is too high. They also check on maintenance of the houses and service costs. They regularly determine exorbitant rents, sometimes even three hundred Euros above the average price according to the point system.

How does it work when you contact the rent-teams?

The rent-teams actually make a compromise between the renter and the letter (house keeper), to make sure the relationship between the both remains friendly. Sometimes a renter contacts rent tribunal, which starts a procedure to lower the rent. But most of the times this is not necessary and the rent-teams can fix the job.

Free check of rent

There are a few other cases in which the renter was intimidated by the letter and stopped the procedure. One letter even cursed and threatened the renter. In most cases the rent-teams can calm down the letter by compromising. There are also many letters who immediately recognize and respect the argumentation and directly lower their rent.

Students who think they are paying too much rent for their rooms, can check www.huurteamsnijmegen.nl (Dutch website) or mail to info@huurteamsnijmegen.nl for a free check!
