Go Arnhem United!

31-08-2010 @ 14:29:50 by Marijn Hondorp

Sweating male foreheads, flying balls and encouraging ‘chicas’ on the sidelines. It is not a real World-Cup final, but therefore the feeling of competition isn’t less. Because here, Arnhem United and the Jagermeisters fight against each other for victory. No clue what this is all about?

Meet and Greet during the introduction

It’s the final of the soccer tournament for the new exchange students. They couldn’t be more enthusiastic, according to the communication students who organized the introduction. Joanne: ‘These international students take part in everything, they join it all.’ In advance of the soccer tournament, the students already had a pub-crawl, an exchange-game and an exploration of the campus. Chances enough to meet new students and get to know each other. ‘Yes I think I know everybody by now’, the American Joe says.

No objection

The well-known no-I’d-rather-not-participate-shame seems to be typical Dutch, as the organization has only positive remarks about their new foreign friends. Eline: ‘Nobody objects to anything, they do the craziest things. Yesterday we started with exchanging a tea bag for something bigger, and one group came back with a television.’ There is no such thing as nationalism (that is to say, students who only hang out with their own compatriots). Joanne: ‘It is just one big, cosy, English-speaking mess.’ And for those who read this article for the soccer tournament: after a draw, Arnhem United defeated the Jagermeisters during the injury time with a sudden death goal.
