La Naranja Mecanica

10-06-2010 @ 11:52:25 by Marijn Hondorp

Gilbert Klumpenaar, third-year student International Business and Languages at the faculty of Economics and Management in Arnhem, does his traineeship at a big international agrarian company in Lima, Peru. For our international edition of Sensor, he wrote his column in English!

Peru is out of the game

During my traineeship here, many colleagues talk about the World Cup. That is actually very odd; Peru doesn’t even participate to the World Cup, they even ended up last during the qualifying rounds. Football is very much alive in Peru. But it doesn’t really show because of bad direction within the confederation and bad guidance of the players.

The Orange Machine

The Peruvians know everything about the Dutch team because a Peruvian (Sutil) once played together with Johan Cruijff in team Barcelona. The Dutch team is called ‘La Naranja Mecánica’ here, that is the Orange Machine, because Holland used to play the first edition of professional Football in the world.

Those brutal Peruvians

We can see that Football is alive here, everywhere small soccer fields can be found. I play football with my colleagues after work sometimes, which is always great fun. Well, actually it is great fun after the game, because during the game the Peruvian are very brute. During my company’s meeting, there is always a football competition between the employees from the office in Lima, and the employees from the factory in the south. It was a strange experience to me. The people had brought all possible things to make noise with, bells and tooters and other horns, just to create a good atmosphere.

Rivalry and beer

There is great rivalry between the two offices, as the employees remind each other to the game a whole year long. That was the most important reason for the harsh game. After the game, everybody is friends again and a lot of beer is drunk. I think that this is an international phenomenon. Eventually, the office in Lima won. This game was a foretaste to the event in South-Africa… On to the real World Cup!
