Three Gorges Dam further explained

The gigantic Three gorges dam-project reaches its finish. The biggest hydro-electric power station with flood-control dam in the world is 185 meters high and 2309 meters long and has thirty-two generators which, expectedly, all will function next year. The dam is situated in the Yangtze river, which is the longest river in China with its 6000 kilometers.
Mass removal versus interesting construction
Enough material for guest-lecturer professor Xiaohua Dong of the Three Gorges University, invited by the institute Built Environment in Arnhem, to deliver a lecture about this gigantic construction. Proponents are pointing at the giant energy production, the decreased risk of floods and an improvement of the inland shipping. The fact that already 1.4 million inhabitants had to move (dozens of complete cities, hundreds of villages and factories have been under water) seems to be unimportant, not to mention the catastrophic consequences for the environment. Furthermore, it is expected that another four million inhabitants of the area will have to move in the next ten to fifteen years. The forty teachers, employees and students present are more interested in the constructional story behind this striking power station.
