Less obstacles for students abroad

Minister Plasterk wants to support Dutch students abroad more. He said this in consultation with the Lower Chamber.
Some really need the help
The minister acknowledges that there are many obstacles for students who want to take up a study abroad. At the CDA’s request (political party) he will make a plan to support students abroad. ‘A part of them will find their own way’, says Plasterk, who studied half a year in England himself. ‘But another part of them needs the help’.
Foreign study accepted
The network NEWS asked attention for the Dutch students’ troubles abroad. Research among 350 students showed that a quarter had difficulties getting their foreign study acknowledged by the Information Management Group and internationalization organization NUFFIC. Moreover, half of the students doing a study abroad had troubles with the study grants.
Requirements for grant
In the meanwhile, Holland has to justify the rules around the take-along grants in Europe. To get qualified for a grant, students must have lived three of the six preceded years in Holland. This requirement is contradictory to the rules of free intercourse of employees, according to the European committee.
Happy ending?
The case is now transferred to the European court. Minisiter Plasterk has faith in a good ending, but warned that Holland, in case of loss, has to reconsider the take-along study grants.
