Not enough female professors until 2030

01-10-2009 @ 14:53:37 by Sensor

If the situation continues, until 2030 not even one in four professors in the Dutch universities will be female. Holland is far behind the rest of Europe.

Goal for 2010

Only Belgium, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta have less female professors compared to Holland. The front runner is Ireland, where more than one in three professors is of the female sex. The European countries agreed that a quarter of the professors must be female in 2010, but Holland is not likely to achieve this goal.

Low percentage Technical University

Between the universities huge differences occur. The most female professors are settled in Leiden (16.3 per cent) and Nijmegen (16.7 per cent). The Technical University Eindhoven has the least female professors; only 1.6 per cent is female.

Part-time versus Full-time

The question is whether the difference in career-opportunities can be explained by sexism. Do women often work part-time compared to men and does that limit their opportunities? The fact is that women often work part time. Of the university’s professors, 64 per cent of the men work fulltime, whereas 43 per cent of the women do.

Sexism?

Research shows that a selection committee consisting of only men, rarely engage a women: only in 7.5 per cent of the cases. If two women are in the committee, there is a chance of 24 per cent that a woman will be engaged.
