Students dropping out can be pointed out beforehand

Already in September it can be predicted which students are likely to drop out during the school year. Students who drop out during the first year often made their choice of study quite late, they had not been well informed and chose a study because of status and salary.
Choice based on status
This is shown in a research by bureau ResearchNe, amongst 3800 first year students. The results of the research will be published today in Utrecht. First year students who base their study on the status of a profession or the corresponding salary, are more likely to quit compared to students with an interest in the contents of the study.
City is reason for choice
School-grades are also good predictors: Students who did less well on HAVO or VWO, stop more often in their first year of an education. Students dropping out thought less about their future study, were not informed well and didn’t have that many interviews of admission. They also found the city and college life important aspects to choose for an education.
Think Twice
If institutes would pay attention to this, they would be able to recognise at least forty per cent of the drop-out students, the research bureau thinks. Study-choosers are recommended to eliminate all doubts and especially to think about the reasons for choosing a specific education. In Higher Vocational Education, one-third of all students in the first years drops out. In the universities this is a quarter of all students.
