FEM at birds-level

FEM, the faculty of Economics and Management, celebrates its fortieth anniversary. Employees therefore took their chance to create a musical. More than one year full of writing, singing, rehearsals and dancing resulted in a sparkling performance on 18 and 19 September. A gift to the faculty.
A twittering choir of birds
The musical FEM 40 years briefly, tells the history of the FEM. It is also the story of Prometheus who is chained to a rock while white birds beleaguer him, and Hera (Zeus’ wife) who constantly complains about her husband. Mercurius, god of trading, takes Prometheus’ seat, but this temporarily employee is not doing that well. Hera shouts ‘I want peace and quiet!’, while the twittering background choir make their comments.
Goose bumps
A show of two and a half hours, including a lot of dancing, short films and interviews. But above it all, a lot of music as it is a musical of course. Some songs are aimed too high, but the orchestra is wonderful and it has got soloists of high levels. One of the birds gets shot, and suddenly it is quiet and empty. In the background, a breath-taking film can be seen about flying storks and pelicans while Curly Huisman sings the song: ‘Vanmorgen vloog ze nog’ (translated: She was flying, this very morning), which causes goose bumps to the whole audience.
The audience
The audience? The audience has a great evening. Marijke Bouckaert (teacher at the part-time FEM) notices how much pleasure the players have with each other. ‘Jetty Schaap surprised me. A singing director, how wonderful! And Henk Oost was shining as prototype of the janitor, with tattooed arms. I regret that I have not taken part in this play, that was an extremely stupid decision. This is the FEM-feeling.’ It would not have been possible for the employees to give the FEM a more beautiful gift. ‘This really is the FEM-feeling.’
