Check your room at the site of National Union of Students

29-09-2009 @ 15:04:04 by Sensor

Do you have the right to receive rent allowance, without knowing it? Do you pay too much for your cupboard? Is your room fireproof? You can check it out at www.checkjekamer.nl, an initiative of the National Union of Students.

Alarming prices

Minister van der Laan (Housing, Communities and Integration) has launched ‘checkjekamer.nl’. This site is a new version of the room-check which was introduced by the National Union of Students (NUS) in 2007. The results were very alarming those days: many students turned out to pay a lot more than the allowed rent, or lived in a room which was not fireproof. ‘We were shocked by the last results’, NUS-spokesman Gerard Oosterwijk says. ‘And we still hear a lot of stories of students who live in expensive and qualitatively poor rooms.’

The ideal room

The students’ union will promote the site in seven university cities in the next two weeks. Minister van der Laan also launched a site for lodgers. At www.studentenwoonwensen.nl, students can fill in a poll about their ideal rooms. The results will influence new plans for future student accommodation.
