Drive in a car in 2050

Sustainability is the word at the moment. The whole HAN becomes sustainable, (see it on www.han.nl/duurzaamheid) and Automotiv is in the lead. With a symposium about how we can drive best in the future, Automotiv (Autotechniek) showed we don’t have to be afraid of running through all the oil!
LPG
Senior Lecturer Peter Mesman sees future in LPG. ‘The best thing about it is that biogas is released during the driving, and that is purely natural.’ Mesman would like to see cars equipped with an LPG-tank in 2050. ‘But the best solution for driving sustainable does not exist.’ Teacher Menno Merts agrees with this. ‘A combination of different fuelsand techniques is the future. And ethanol can surely have a role in that.’
Alcohol
Merts said his piece during the symposium about the fuel gotten from alcohol. ‘This is made from biological waste and is therefore CO2-neutral.’ But driving clean isn’t everything, as the price tag is also important. ‘Unfortunately, driving on ethanol isn’t economical. The costs per litre are similar to the costs of petrol, but you can drive seventy percent less compared to a normal tank of petrol.’ Fortunately, there is a solution for people who want to do something sustainable already but have a small wallet, according to Merts. ‘At many petrol stations you can buy Flexi-fuel, a mixture of petrol and ethanol.’
