To the jury with the Tuk-tuk

When you hear grumbling noises coming out of the laboratories of the institute of Automotive (Autotechniek), there is a great chance the tuk-tuk-team is finishing the last parts of their tuk-tuk. Monday 18th May they will present their tuk-tuk to a panel of judges and the press. In the second half of July the team will go to India. If everything will work out fine, of course…
HAN Tuk-tuk-team
Let’s refresh our memory; At the moment, there are four teams of students from acedemies and universities in Holland who are busy reconstructing their tuk-tuks. These are original Indian tuk-tuks, which the students try to make more environent-friendly.
Students are operating force behind the tuk-tuk
The group students from Arnhem consists of ten students approximately, who have been working on their tuk-tuk for almost one year. In July the groups will go to India where the final battle takes place; the winning design will be constructed, and if possible it will be done by the students themselves.
By reconstructing the dirty tuk-tuks the students actually work for a better environment. That is, there are millions of these vehicles driving around, guzzling up enormous amounts of fuel.
18th May, Rotterdam
Firstly, the group of students will present their tuk-tuk in Rotterdam. A panel of judges and the press will be present, and the students have to score points on their presentation on progress and their businessplan. How is the tuk-tuk from Arnhem doing? Ruben Antvelink, one of the students of the HAN-group says: ‘The problem is that the tuk-tuks we work with, are all outdated. They break down continuously. Our tuk-tuk is still working, fortunately, but the one of the group from Eindhoven fails all the time. Whether we can go to India or not, that’s still the question.’
Is the whole group going ? ‘ Almost the whole group. One of the female members is pregnant, she is about to give birth. Another member is participating in the world’s championship playing the drums, so he won’t come either.’
Tuk-tuk Battle and Rickshaw Challenge
The Tuk-tuk Battle will take place from the 13th till 26th of July. Two teams from India are also participating. Will the studentgroup from Arnhem go home after the battle is done? Nothing is certain yet. At the same time, there is another Rickshaw Challenge, a battle for tuk-tuks. The winner is the one who is able to drive 1600 kilometres the quickest with the tuk-tuk. Let’s hope they drive in an environment-friendly cart.
