Swinging among the cows

One thing the Dutch are famous for is ‘Boerengolf’, or ‘Farmer’s Golf’. The only ingredients you need are a clog on a stick, a small football and wide ranges of grass-land. Sensor challenged two German students, Sonja and Christina, for a friendly game. And got her butt kicked…
Finding our way to the site where the game will be held is very hard. Soon we are lost. ‘Ah, the first typical Dutch experience!’ Christina laughs. Sonja and Christina, both students IBMS, don’t know what to expect of ‘Farmer’s Golf’. But when we explain that the rules are the same as golf, but instead of a normal club we use a clog on a stick and a small football, they appear confident. ‘Shouldn’t be hard’, Sonja says. In the meantime we reach the site, a farm and its surrounding grass-land. After a short introduction we start the game. Ten holes. Two female students against two male employees of Sensor.
You can’t beat German tactics!’
With a huge swing Sonja opens the game. Getting near the bucket in the ground is no problem, one just has to watch out the ball doesn’t end up in the water or in the bushes, but putting it in is the biggest problem. Many battles are fought around the flag. Pretty soon the score is 3-3. Each time they putt a ball in the bucket, the two girls look at each ochter and say: ‘You can’t beat German tactics!’ Quite true actually, because after dodgin overflying balls and curious cows, the final score after ten holes is 6-4 in favour of the ladies. The men of Sensor, ashamed and depressed, are being subjected to the innocent teasing of the winners. All they wanted was to show a typical Dutch activity, they never expected to get their butt kicked. Sometimes cultural exchange can be very hard…
