HAN students quickly reach finishing line

Of all students who started an occupational training in 2003, 58 % graduated in five years. The efficiency after eight years is 68 %. This is the avarage for all universities of professional education. A research by the HBO-council shows that the results end up more positively for HAN-University.
At the HAN, 62 % of the students receive their diploma in five years, and the efficiency after eight years is 69,5% (These are the students who started their education in the year 2000). Compared to the multi-sectorial universities the results look very prosperous. The HAN takes second place, after Avans.
'Our foundation years have a good selective effect'
Ron Bormans, chairman of the Board of Governers, considers the results a compliment to the university. ‘It seems that our foundation years have a good selective effect, which is also our aim. When you have passed the foundation year, there is a great chance you will graduate soon.’
Research shows the efficiency of the main study phase rising, while the efficiency of the foundation year is sinking. Attention has to be paid to this last development, according to Bormans. ‘The proportions of these two have to be kept in balance. We are now analysing every institu on its problems which the students get stuck with. We want to emphasize the vulnerable groups which start; we want to communicate honestly with them, we want to provide good coaching when it comes to study and we want to supply extra teaching activities.’
